On 5 December 2018, the Government released the first draft of legislation dealing with the proposed ring-fencing of tax losses from rental properties. First impression on reading the Bill is that it is extraordinarily complicated and leaves questions unanswered. Here is a quick summary of..
Read ArticleEarlier this year I wrote about some of the dangers posed by the bright-line rule when restructuring. I did this because the bright-line rule is something we grapple with daily at GRA. However, there is a series of questions that come up on a regular..
Read ArticleThere is no doubt the Tax Working Group’s recently released interim report is the topic du jour. Accordingly, it is only appropriate that I offer my two cents’ worth, particularly in relation to the comments on a possible capital gains tax. The Tax Working Group (TWG) has ruled..
Read ArticleMiddle class, sometimes low net worth people run our labour force, including the public sector for essential services. Police, fire fighters, teachers, nurses, even doctors, are struggling to get a home in supply-starved Auckland – so they move to the regions. Net result: our schools,..

Read ArticleHi Matthew, my name is Mark Soster and I would just like to congratulate you on your wonderful book Property 101. A few weeks ago I had a "financial awakening" and began devouring all the books I could find on the subject, however I keep coming back to yours. After 3 reissues from the library I think it easier now just to buy it. Wonderfully simple yet complex enough to require multiple reads and note taking. It has taken a lot of the fear away with regards to property investment but also tempered me with caution. Without it I would probably have stupidly invested anywhere but Auckland, telling myself it’s too expensive, I now appreciate why would you invest anywhere else? The numbers never lie, in a 20 year plan then Auckland is King for capital gain. As a fan of maths (the only perfect thing on earth?) I can see how each opportunity can be ruthlessly examined on a purely financial level. Anyway, thanks again, I will definitely be contacting your company with regards to coaching and expertise. - Mark Soster - October 2017
